As of July 1st, 2018, House Bill 21 mandates specific regulations in regards to narcotic and controlled substance prescriptions in the state of Florida. Controlled substance and narcotic prescriptions (Oxycodone, Norco, Vicodin, Hydrocodone, etc.) will require an evaluation by your treating physician and, if refilled, still require a hand written prescription. Alternative, non-narcotic medications will also likely be utilized in place of narcotic prescriptions.
NSAID prescriptions (Mobic, Celebrex, Naprosyn, Ibuprofen, etc) may be refilled, but if prolonged use is intended for greater than 2-3 months, patients will generally be referred to their primary care physician for any further refills. Lab work should generally be followed by your PCP if prolonged medication use is planned.
It is important to note any new medications that have been prescribed since your last appointment so that potential interactions can be avoided. NSAIDs should not be taken if you are on blood thinners of any kind.
