About
Dr. R. Bryan Butler is an orthopaedic surgeon with an interest in specialized care for injuries of the Shoulder and Elbow. Originally from California, Dr. Butler attended Northwestern University, from which he obtained a double major in Biological Sciences and Economics, the latter of which he graduated with honors. While at Northwestern, he was a member of the Rowing Team and became Captain of the team in his senior year. He then attended the University of Maryland – School of Medicine, where he was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Society. After deciding to pursue a career in orthopaedics, he continued his training in Baltimore at the University of Maryland Medical Center and R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. During his residency, he was involved in research, education, lectures, and was selected by the faculty and his co-residents to be the Academic Chief Resident in his final year of residency.
Post residency, Dr. Butler continued his training at the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Fellowship Program. He trained at both Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) under Dr. JP Warner and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) under Dr. Larry Higgins. This program encompassed advanced training in shoulder arthroscopy and open treatments of the shoulder. During that time, he was given the opportunity to travel to Annecy, France to train with the world renowned shoulder surgeon Dr. Laurent LaFosse. Following his shoulder fellowship and to enhance his sub-specialty training in Elbow Surgery, Dr. Butler traveled to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota to work with Dr. Shawn O’Driscoll to enhance his knowledge and experience.
Initially pursuing a career in academic medicine, Dr. Bryan Butler started his career path as an Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio and later, was recruited to Charleston, South Carolina to practice at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in the Shoulder and Elbow division. Dr. Butler decided to join the Orthopaedic Medical Group of Tampa Bay, to bring his expertise to the private practice setting to help treat abnormalities of the shoulder and elbow such as Rotator Cuff Disorders, Arthritis of the Shoulder, Shoulder Instability, Shoulder and Elbow Fractures, Sports Injuries, Shoulder Replacements including Anatomic and Reverse Total Shoulder Replacements, and Elbow Ligament Injuries, Elbow Arthritis, Elbow Stiffness, Tendon Injuries, Elbow Replacements.
Dr. Butler is married with two children, a boy and a girl. Dr. Butler enjoys spending time with his family as his number one hobby! He also enjoys golf, fishing, basketball, tennis, and traveling.
