The culture of Orthopaedic Medical Group was born over 40 years ago when Dr. Stuart Goldsmith created a company and chose that name, with those now famous initials – O. M. G. The third word in our name – GROUP – truly encapsulates our mission statement and primary goal of creating a partnership of healthcare providers to deliver the highest level of care to all of our patients.
Patient care is our primary responsibility, and all decisions made at O.M.G. are centered around this goal. We strive to help one another, cover each other when needed, provide assistance both in the office setting and operating rooms, and have created wonderful personal relationships outside of work that continue to mature and flourish. This unique working environment, first born under Dr. Stuart Goldsmith all of those years ago, now emanates throughout the entire company, starting at the Board level and permeating to each and every O.M.G. employee.
We are all very fortunate to have the opportunity to care for our patients surrounded by this team of dedicated staff members.
Dr. Stuart Goldsmith completed his orthopedic surgery training at the University of Florida in Gainesville and moved his family to Tampa to begin his career. A brand new hospital was just opening in Brandon, Florida, and he became the first orthopedic surgeon on staff there in 1978.
Shortly thereafter, Dr. Goldsmith created the Orthopaedic Medical Group, with the intent to grow and expand his practice over time. Although he had several surgeons join him over the following years, it wasn’t until 2008 when his son, Dr. Scott Goldsmith, who had recently completed his orthopedic training up in New York City, moved back to Tampa to join him in the practice that the Orthopaedic Medical GROUP truly began.
The father and son duo, the Drs. Goldsmith, soon expanded the practice to the Plant City market, and quickly the business began to grow. Behind a solid reputation of providing great patient care, accepting all patients and being readily available, Stuart and Scott Goldsmith began attracting the attention of many around the greater Tampa Bay region.
In 2012, Dr. Jeffrey Watson was completing his distinguished career with the United States Air Force at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. Through a mutual connection, Dr. Watson began working with the Goldsmiths, initially part time and then full time upon his successful discharge from the military. Dr. Watson quickly embraced the OMG culture and, through his entrepreneurial talents, helped create a multitude of avenues to further the growth of the company.
Dr. Watson reached out to a prior colleague, Dr. Edward Becker, who he trained with at the University of Maryland. Dr. Becker joined the group in 2013, and the now four man group was soon off and running, expanding their coverage region from Tampa and across the I-4 corridor out to Winter Haven. New office openings, increased staff, improved technology and the firm commitment to the pre-existing culture of hard work, patient care and constant availability led to continued opportunities for growth and expansion.
In 2014, Richard Menk became the lead administrator, and Jodi Schwartz was elevated to run the billing and financial side of the practice. 2015 brought the addition of three more surgeons, all of whom had trained through the University of Maryland orthopedic program. Dr. Bryan Butler (shoulder and elbow specialist), Dr. Adam Jester (trauma specialist) and Dr. Mark Sando (sports specialist) joined OMG and made an immediate impact through their commitment to patient care, as well as their dedication to the OMG culture of togetherness, support of one another and the “work hard / play hard” mantra.
With all of these additions, OMG was poised to skyrocket to levels never previously imagined.
Today, the Orthopaedic Medical Group of Tampa Bay provides care to the entire region ranging from the west in St. Petersburg, all the way to Winter Haven at its eastern stretch. We currently employ eleven orthopedic surgeons and a podiatrist. We have 11 physician assistants and more than a dozen athletic trainers among our staff of 130 employees. There are now eight office locations, three of which are home to our physical therapy suites. 2021 saw the opening of our brand new Lithia Location, which includes a medical office, our third physical therapy location, a complete administration building and a brand new OMG Surgery Center.
From what started as a small solo practitioner orthopedic surgeon with an idea, has sprung an entire new generation of more than twenty orthopedic health care providers that continue to thrive, grow, and care for thousands of patients every year. We remain true to our roots, with an unwavering dedication to ethics, morals and a commitment to patient care first and foremost.
Our belief in each other and willingness to work as a team and a true partnership is the driver of our explosive growth and success. We rarely take the time to look in our rear-view mirror as the future remains so very bright, however we are very aware that this bright future has only been made possible by the foundation that was laid long ago.
