About
Dr. Clayton Bauer is a neurosurgeon specializing in the management of spine disorders. A native of Florida, Dr. Bauer grew up in the small town of DeLand. He spent a year at Stetson University before completing his undergraduate studies at Wake Forest University earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology as well as minors in chemistry, neuroscience, and psychology. He was the recipient of the Walter S. Flory Service Award and Elton C. Cocke Award for outstanding undergraduate student in biology. He had an early interest in neuroscience and co-authored multiple publications on a variety of topics in the field.
After taking some additional time after graduation to continue his research in neuroscience, Dr. Bauer went on to do a combined medical school (M.D.) and graduate school (Ph.D.) program at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. While in graduate school, he did extensive research in the field of neuropharmacology as part of his doctorate in Pharmacology and Toxicology before becoming focused on the field of neurosurgery during his medical training. After graduation from medical school, he moved back to Florida to complete his residency in neurosurgery at the University of South Florida. Dr. Bauer underwent 7 years of training in the treatment of both brain and spine disorders – including elective time spent seeking out advanced training in complex spine surgery.
Dr. Bauer believes that all patients are different and should be treated as individuals. This involves personalized plans regarding non-operative and operative interventions. If patient’s do require surgery, he has a wide skill set to treat patient’s symptoms. Examples of surgical interventions that he performs include microdiscectomy, laminectomy, minimally invasive lumbar fusion, open lumbar fusion, anterior cervical fusion, posterior cervical fusion, cervical disc replacement, spinal cord stimulators, deformity correction for scoliosis, and many others.
