1. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most well-known wrist conditions, affecting countless individuals worldwide. Risk factors for carpal tunnel syndrome include: diabetes, obesity, and pregnancy. This condition occurs when the transverse carpal ligament (TCL) places pressure on the median nerve in the wrist and hand. Common symptoms include tingling and numbness, especially on the thumb, index, and middle fingers. Patients also commonly complain that they are “dropping” objects due to loss of grip strength.

Mild carpal tunnel syndrome may be treated non-surgically with injections. For those with moderate to severe carpal tunnel syndrome, a carpal tunnel release procedure may be recommended. This surgery involves relieving pressure on the median nerve by releasing the transverse carpal ligament.

2. Trigger Finger

In most cases, the cause of trigger finger is unknown, however repetitive gripping motions may contribute to having the condition. Certain health conditions such as diabetes may also increase incidence of trigger finger. The condition is caused by inflammation and irritation of the tendons that allow you to flex your finger.

Symptoms of trigger finger include pain with finger motion, along with “catching”, or “locking” of the finger. It may occur to any finger at any age. Trigger finger can sometimes be resolved with steroid injections, however if the condition returns afterwards, surgery may be indicated.

3. De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis

Another common wrist condition is DeQuervain’s tenosynovitis, which occurs when certain tendons in the wrist become inflamed. Exacerbating factors include repetitive or prolonged gripping lifting that strains the tendons. Treatment options depend on the severity of the inflammation and may include occupational therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, bracing, injections, or, in more severe cases, surgery.

4. Basal Joint Arthritis

Osteoarthritis is one of the most common forms of arthritis, caused by the gradual wear and tear on our joints over time. As the cartilage deteriorates, bones begin to rub against each other, leading to pain and discomfort. Basal joint arthritis specifically affects the joint at the base of the thumb, causing pain, stiffness, swelling near the wrist, and difficulty with hand movement. Treatment options may include anti-inflammatory medications, injections, or a hand-based splint. In more severe cases, surgery may be recommended by your orthopedic surgeon.

5. Ganglion Cysts

If you notice a “bump” on your hand or wrist, it may be a ganglion cyst. Although the exact cause of these cysts is unknown, they are benign. While these cysts are usually not painful, it can cause pain with full wrist extension. Ganglion cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can be drained by an orthopedic surgeon with a simple needle aspiration or surgically removed. While aspiration or removal is effective, there’s a slight chance the cysts may return.
